10 Things that can Age You

Over time skin suffers natural wear and tear, just like other parts of the body. The difference is that changes in the skin’s look, feel and texture are visible as the first signs of aging.

So here are a few things you might wish to avoid if you want to keep your skin looking younger.

  1. Eating inflammatory foods

Foods that have an inflammatory effect on the body will also impact the skin. Internal inflammation can reflect wrinkles and fine lines externally so try to eat foods like fresh produce, lean sources of protein and omega 3 rich foods to promote collagen production.

  1. Feeding your sweet tooth

Sugary drinks and sweet treats are not just bad for your waistline but bad for the skin. Consuming too much sugary food can make the skin look dull. Plus, sugar saps energy and leaves you feeling sluggish after spikes and dips.

  1. Crash dieting

While it is important to maintain a balance when eating, it is also important not to jump from one diet to the other. These diets can have a dramatic aging effect since they are often cut short on essential fats, or other food groups depriving you of essential nutrients and antioxidants.

  1. Alcohol consumption

Alcohol has a dehydrating effect on the body. Frequent drinking leaches the natural moisture from the skin with the possibility of triggering skin conditions along with the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

  1. Stress management

Stress can make skin appear tired and dull much faster than many other factors. Plus, chronic stress can also trigger acne breakouts and sleep disturbances. So try to de-stress with activities like going for a walk, reading a book or taking a warm bath.

  1. Sleep deprivation

Insufficient sleep can lead to impaired cognition and memory performance. Over time sleep disturbances can also affect the immune system and speed up the aging process. Try to get an adequate amount of sleep every night to prevent the loss of skin elasticity, under eye puffiness and uneven pigmentation.

  1. Smoking

Smoking promotes aging and affects your physical appearance. Smoking deprives skin cells of oxygen, breaks down collagen and leads to loose, sagging skin.

  1. Too much sun exposure

Sunbathing is one of the worst offenders for premature aging. Excessive exposure to the sun weakens skin cells and blood vessels giving the skin a dry, leathery look. To prevent this from happening use sunscreen every time you step out the door and reapply every 2-3 hours.

  1. Not enough exercise

People who do not follow a regular exercise program have higher rates of cardiovascular disease and other illnesses. On the other hand, regularly done moderate exercise can benefit not only your weight and heart but also rejuvenate the skin.

  1. Excessive face and hand washing

Too much washing can damage skin and cause it to age faster. To prevent this, limit face washing to two times daily and moisturize hands after every wash.
