Having nutrient deficiencies can often go neglected as they present some very generic symptoms.
Over time, these symptoms may even develop into diseases with long term consequences. For instance, calcium and vitamin D deficiencies over time can lead to osteoporosis which is marked by brittle bones.
Since nutrient deficiencies can seriously contribute to health problems, it is important to recognize the symptoms at an early stage and deal with them as soon as possible. Some common signs can often point out red flags and indicate that your body may be lacking in specific nutrients:
- Hair loss
One of the most common signs stating that you may be nutrient deficient is hair loss. Hair loss will take place if you maybe have hormonal imbalance or other such deficiency. Since hair loss can often happen in large amounts it is significantly a noticeable sign.
People with a biotin deficiency are likely to come across hair loss and even skin rashes. The problem should be dealt with at an early stage and can be helped by making sure the body is receiving enough protein and vitamins.
- Cramps
Coming across frequent leg cramps is maybe a sign that your body is lacking necessary nutrients. Cramps, especially in the leg, likely happen because of dehydration, strained muscles or because of overuse of a muscle. The pain can be severe and is a sign that maybe your body is lacking potassium, calcium, and/or magnesium.
- Acne and skin problems
Acne is everyoneβs nightmare and cannot always be dealt with by using anti-inflammatory medication or moisturizers. If the condition is the result of a nutrient deficiency, then the best course of action would be to identify that deficiency.
Skin conditions such as acne and blemishes can easily happen when the body lacks in important vitamins such as vitamin A, D or E. The same may also happen if there is an omega 3 deficiency.
- Fatigue and Weakness
People with nutrient deficiencies can be less active than those who don’t have any deficiencies. This is because the body isn’t receiving enough vitamins important for optimal functioning of the different systems.
Weakness, shortness of breath and tiredness are common signs stating that the body isn’t in a fit state. The most widespread nutritional deficiency that causes fatigue and weakness is an iron deficiency which if not corrected on time can lead to anemia.
- Depression
If you are gloomy and feeling out of sorts it may be because your body isn’t receiving the right amount of nutrients needed to help maintain brain mass.
Certain nutrients such as omega 3s are needed for brain cell structure. Others like iodine, zinc, magnesium and selenium can offer help for optimal brain health.
Making smart dietary choices is the first step towards correcting nutritional deficiencies. In the absence of the right nutrients, bodily functions get disrupted and the systems are less able to absorb and use the nutrients available. When diet cannot make up for insufficient nutrients, doctors may recommend turning to supplements.
Consult your doctor before starting any supplements.
