Steamed Broccoli Red Onion Salad

Today, we’ll be looking into a delicious and healthy side dish recipe of steamed broccoli and red onion salad. It’s a quick and easy fix for when you need some extra greens with your meal. It takes no longer than ten minutes to prepare and a following ten to sit and chill.

There are only two main ingredients in this recipe being broccoli and onions, with seasonings of black pepper, salt, and garlic with dressings of lemon juice and olive oil to top it all off.

Steamed Broccoli Red Onion Salad Recipe

Prep Time: 10 minutes


  1. 1 full head of broccoli
  2. ½ red onion
  3. ½ teaspoon salt
  4. ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  5. 2 cloves of garlic (minced)
  6. ½ fresh lemon juice
  7. 1 tablespoon olive oil

First, we start with the broccoli. Take a full broccoli and chop it up into smaller parts, leaving the stems on. Using a double boiler, steam the broccoli for 4 to 6 minutes. Once it’s done, place the broccoli into a bowl where you can mix in all the other ingredients.

The next step is to cut up ½ of a red onion into slim slices which you can then add to your broccoli bowl. Mix them around a little to ensure you evenly spread the seasonings and dressings later.

Now, sprinkle ¼ teaspoon of black pepper, ½ teaspoon of salt, and 2 cloves of garlic minced into your salad. Give it a good stir so both your broccoli and your red onions are generously coated.

Next, it’s time to pour one tablespoon of olive oil and ½ fresh lemon juice. You could use store-bought lemon juice if you don’t have fresh lemons at home, but it’ll never be able to match the effect of a freshly squeezed lemon. Be sure to mix the dressing well so the broccoli and red onions absorb the flavor properly.

Once you’re done mixing, you can store your salad in the fridge for 5 to 10 minutes to chill, and voila! Your steamed broccoli and red onion salad is done and ready to serve!
